  Tuesday, August 11. Nine in the morning until four in the afternoon. Over forty people in one room with their laptops open, building AI workflows in Drupal for an entire day.

That was *Drupal AI: Practical AI Integration for Content Workflows*, the full-day training Matthew Saunders and I taught at Drupal GovCon for amazee.io. Here's what we actually did.

## Everybody Started With a Working Site

The fastest way to kill a hands-on training is to spend the first ninety minutes on environment setup. So we didn't. amazee.ai co-sponsored the day and spun up clean Drupal sandboxes at [drupal.org/ai/demo](https://drupal.org/ai/demo) — free, ready in a few minutes, with API keys, credits, and a vector database already in place.

Three providers were live from the start: amazee.ai, LiteLLM, and OpenAI. Everyone had tokens. Everyone was building by 9:30.

## From Install to David Attenborough Before Lunch

I walked the class through the module stack — AI Core, AI Automators, AI Agents, AI Assistant API, AI Chatbot, AI Image Alt Text, AI API Explorer — and then straight into permissions, because out of the box Drupal hands AI permissions to administrators only. That's the right default. It's also the first thing you'll need to think through for your own editors.

Then the fun part. We configured AI tools in CKEditor 5, built a **Tone** taxonomy, and added a term for David Attenborough with a description telling the model to write with "awe and wonder for the natural world." Paste in a dry article, highlight it, change the tone, watch it transform.

This was fun too: we didn't build that vocabulary by hand. We asked the chatbot to create it — vocabulary, terms, and term descriptions — and it was done in seconds. Agents doing site building, live, in front of the room.

## Automators Are Where the Real Work Happens

After lunch we got into prompts, recipes, and automators, and built the Simplify Text workflow: two fields, **Simplified Title** and **Simplified Body**, each wired to an AI Automator that rewrites a graduate-level article to a sixth-grade reading level on save. Claude Sonnet, temperature at 0.1, prompts that specify exactly which HTML tags are allowed and return structured JSON.

That's the difference between a demo and a workflow. A good prompt gives you output you can publish with almost no editing. A vague one gives you something you have to fix by hand — which defeats the purpose.

We also spent real time on the guardrails: never let an automator overwrite human-written content, write to a separate review field first, scope automators to specific content types, restrict who can run bulk operations, and back up before you run anything site-wide.

## Then We Slowed Down

The last session wasn't clicking. Matthew walked the room through transparency, privacy, and fairness — including why a model can be genuinely open-source and still fall short on the other two. We talked about bias in training data, accessibility-forward AI, WCAG 2.2 AA, and keeping a human in the loop for anything that matters. For public sector teams, that conversation isn't optional.

Forty people, seven hours, one working AI content workflow each. That's not the future of Drupal. That was Tuesday.
